Oilton is situated on Highway 99 in Creek County, approximately 38 miles west of Tulsa. Oilton rose out of the Oklahoma plains in 1915 with the discovery of oil in the nearby Cushing-Drumright Oilfield. The first residents arrived in 1915, a post office was established, and a bank and newspaper began operations. By 1920, the population of Oilton was over 2200. The town was incorporated in 1921.
By alas and alack, oil production began to decline in the 1920's, along with the Oilton population. Today, there are about 1000 residents, and the town is primarily agricultural in nature. The majority of citizens of Oilton commute to jobs in nearby towns. But this doesn't mean Oilton has died. This town has an eye set on the future. Its citizens are very proud of their town, and evidence can be seen everywhere. The town celebrated their 100th anniversary in 2015. Just west of the downtown area, in Oilton City Park, a centennial bench honors the town's anniversary. A time capsule is buried nearby in the park, to be opened in 2040. Oilton is a symbol of what has made Oklahoma great.
