Handsome equestrian statue of General Bernardo O'Higgins located in Plaza O'Higgins in downtown Valparaiso.

O'Higgins was born in Chillan Chile in 1777, the son of the Governor of Chile and a Chilean mother. He was instrumental in the Chilean Independence movement against Spain. As a military officer he was involved in many major skirmishes and battles.

Following independence he served as head of the fledgling Chilean Army. O'Higgins is considered a "founding Father" of Chile.

The statue, located in Plaza O'Higgins in central Valparaiso, was completed in 2002. It is of sculpted bronze affixed to a base of boulders.
