There have been five courthouses in Allen County. The first was here in Iola; the next two were in Cofachique and Humboldt. Iola wrestled the right to be county seat back from the others and constructed the predecessor to this courthouse in 1904. That courthouse featured a seven-story tower with a magnificent clock. That clock is on display on the south side of the courthouse square. This new "modern" style courthouse was construted from 1957 to 1958 by contractors Dondlinger & Sons Construction Company, Inc. of Iola at a total cost of $656,364.
