"According to parapsychologists, sad events such as the executions of heretics and witches in Dam Square would permeate a certain place, where they would be condemned to repeat themselves over and over again. Some say that in Amsterdam 's most important square , when night falls and there is less hustle and bustle of people, the noises and laments of those who centuries ago were victims of the Inquisition can be heard.

It may have something to do with the enigmatic sighting that occurred on September 25, 1874, when several witnesses who were in the building that now houses Madame Tussauds saw a female figure wandering through the windows of the Royal Palace on Dam Square . That vision was never clarified and the theory that it was someone fixing the clock was not accepted by everyone.

They have even gone further, as they say, and they say that you can still see in Dam Square the presence of those protesters who died during the repression unleashed by the Nazis between 25 and 27 February 1941 after public transport drivers refused to transport Jews from their neighbourhood to Amsterdam Central Station , from where they were taken to extermination camps.

Legends about paranormal phenomena in Dam Square are not isolated stories. Although they are not part of the explanations given by tour guides, Amsterdam is full of stories about ghosts and buildings where ghosts are said to roam freely. Perhaps the best-known case is that of the " ghost of Zeedijk ", which has as its protagonist a young woman called Helena .

Helena was a young woman who lived in the 18th century at number 134 on Zeedijk Street , with her father and her sister Dina , where they ran a tannery. Legend has it that the young woman fell madly in love with a handsome sailor named Wouter , but the boy did not reciprocate her love. And why? Because he was madly in love with Dina , his sister. Helena did not know this until she intercepted a sentimental letter in which Wouter declared his love for Dina , and she for him. Something that provoked a great outburst of jealousy in Helena and that would end in tragedy.

Apparently clouded by anger and rage, Helena decided to look for her sister Dina , whom she found in her room. Afterwards, they started a strong fight, in which Helena knocked her sister unconscious. After that, she took the body to the basement of the Zeedijk tannery, where she gave Dina a fatal and final blow to the head and then locked the aforementioned basement. There the body remained forever.

Zeedijk Street, where Helena and her sister Dina lived
When Dina was discovered missing, Wourt thought she had left Amsterdam . To fill the void, he decided to start a relationship with Helena, unaware that she had been the executioner of his beloved. They married and the girl never revealed the murder of her sister until the moment of her death, when she told her husband what had happened decades before. Wourt flew into a rage and, knowing that Helena was about to die, he placed a curse on her, assuring her that she would never find peace.

No sooner said than done. On 24 July 1753, number 134 Zeedijk Street was the scene of loud screams, noises and objects moving on their own. The strange phenomena continued to occur for days, to the fear of the neighbours and the surprise of the city guards. They then remembered the old curse that Wourt had placed on Helena for murdering his sister Dina .

The curious thing is that exactly a century later, on July 24, 1853, the mysterious events happened again in the house where Helena lived and murdered her sister. On this occasion, hundreds of people came to the place to see what was happening, although they could not see who caused it all. Therefore, on that same day but in 1953, journalists and people who knew the legend of Helena's ghost gathered at the door of the building to witness the supernatural events. Unfortunately, on that day nothing happened and Helena's ghost did not make an appearance...
