[EN] “This monument to books and their creators was promoted by Spanish booksellers to be placed on Paseo de Recoletos, which hosts the traditional Old and Used Book Fairs every year, in front of the National Library. The sculpture was commissioned by the Lugo artist Manuel García Vázquez, who signs his name as Buciños after his hometown, while the pedestal was designed by the architect Joaquín Roldán Pascual. It was inaugurated on World Book Day in 1984. During the construction of the El Prado-Recoletos project, the sculpture was dismantled and replaced in a similar position.
Description
This sculptural group offers an unusual unity between its monolithic granite pedestal, in the shape of a broken prism, and the sculpture that sits on it. The first has an oblique cut on its right front that contains the inscription LOS LIBREROS / ESPAÑOLES / AL / LIBRO / Y / SUS CREADORES written in bronze letters; while on its left half sits a highly stylized couple of children of both sexes, with their feet dangling, leaning back and reading a book that they hold between them, where the sculptor's signature BUCIÑOS / 4 1984 is engraved.”
