When this site was first visited (April '08), the post was empty - a number of the markers in the Carlisle area have been 'rejuvenated'...however there is evidence of welding on this newly painted sign, so it may have been hit.
Also interesting to note - the PHMC wesite lists this marker as having been dedicated in 1949 ...yet this sign is dated 2000. This is a heavily travelled road, so it may have been hit before!
Marker text is as follows:
On June 28, 1863, General Richard Ewell received orders from Robert E. Lee to move Ewell's southern troops out of Carlisle and on to Gettysburg. By June 29th two divisions of Ewell's troops marched over this road through Mt. Holly Springs, York Springs, and Heidlersburg towards Gettysburg.
A little local history - this poster's father grew up on a farm just N of Mt. Holly Springs; and when he was young, he saw a photograph of Confederate soldiers sitting on the porch of that same farmhouse...now if I could only track down that photograph!
