Am Retzer Hauptplatz steht die Marien- oder auch Pestsäule genannt. Auf doppeltem Sockel erhebt sich eine schlanke Säule mit schönem Renaissance-Kapitäl, auf dem nach Osten gewendet und mit gefalteten Händen zum Himmel blickend - das Marienstandbild steht; das Haupt der Gottesmutter ist mit einem Sternenkranz umwunden, ihr zu Füßen ist ein Drachen. Am unteren Sockel steht auf der Südseite die lateinische Inschrift: 'Ante augustum ponebar gubernante praetore Wolfgang Kaltendaler'. Das Chronogramm nennt die Jahreszahl: MDLLLVVVVVV (1680). Auf der Westseite steht eine längere unleserliche Inschrift; dann leserlich: 'O heilige Sebastiane, Roch. und Rosalia bittet Gott für uns immerdar mit Maria. Amen. Den 18. Juli 1680. Renov. 1780 den dato.'
Chronik
Die Pestsäule wurde noch mitten im stärksten Wüten der Pest am 18. Juli 1680 auf dem Hauptplatz errichtet. Das Denkmal ist nicht so sehr als Danksäule gedacht, sondern als Bitte an die Gottesmutter, Fürsprecherin in schwerer Pestnot für die bedrängte Stadt zu sein. Kaltendaler war von 1676-1687 Richter in Retz."

At the Hauptplatz (mail square) of Retz is the Marian column, also called plague column. On a double pedestal rises a slender pillar with a beautiful Renaissance capital, on which - turned to the east and with folded hands looking up to the sky - the Virgin Mary is standing; the head of the Mother of God is surrounded by a wreath of stars, at her feet is a dragon. On the south side of the lower pedestal is the Latin inscription: 'Ante augustum ponebar gubernante praetore Wolfgang Kaltendaler'. The chronogram shows the year: MDLLLVVVVVV (1680). On the west side is a longer illegible inscription; then legibly: 'O holy Sebastiane, Roch. and Rosalia always asks God for us with Mary. Amen. 18th of July 1680. Renov. 1780 the date.'
Chronicle
The plague column was erected on the main square in the middle of the strongest rage of the plague on 18 July 1680. The monument is not so much intended as a pillar of thanks, but as a request to the Blessed Mother, to be an advocate for the troubled city in severe plague distress. Kaltendaler was a judge in Retz from 1676-1687.
