Wooden sculpture is about 2 meters high.
The image is a man with a cap and clogs.
In his left hand he has a sort of shovel to stab the peat of the land.
The sculpture stands on a brick stone elevation full of gravel.

It forms part of a wooden collection made by artist Stefan Hempen in 2013 on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the song of the Moors soldiers.

"The "Song of the Moor Soldiers"

The Moorsoldaten song was created in 1933 by prisoners of the concentration camp Börgermoor. (visit link) In this camp mainly political opponents of the Nazi regime were held prisoner. With simple tools like the spade, they had to cultivate the moor there.

The song was performed on August 27, 1933 at an event called "Zirkus Konzentrazani" by 16 inmates, mostly former members of the Solinger workers singing association.

Songwriters of the song were the miner Johann Esser and the actor and director Wolfgang Langhoff, the music was written by Rudi Goguel.

The song emerged as a deliberate protest of the resistance fighters against their oppressors. The external occasion was the "Night of the Long Staff". It was a pogrom, a nocturnal attack by SS men on a barracks, where there were many serious and slightly injured. The answer to this pogrom was to hold a cultural event to demonstrate the higher morality of this cruelty of the SS.

Stefan Hempen (born 1973) reminds with his sculptures of the world premiere - symbol for the resistance against the terror of the Nazi dictatorship."
