Rains and flooding have forced many turtle from their usual habitats; I have seen several turtles out in the last week! But this one was a relatively rare find. There are two snapping turtles indigenous to central Oklahoma; the alligator snapping turtle (easily distinguished by its large size and three bony ridges) and this one, the more frequently-seen common snapping turtle (Chelydra serpentina). Both species are fairly reclusive, stay near the water, and usually come out only at night. This snapping turtle was about 12" across and made it clear that he (she?) was not going to accept my help in crossing this road but he finally made it to the west side where there is (usually) a small farm pond.
A quarter mile down the road I also picked up a small common box turtle and made sure it was across the road as well; see the pic in the gallery. And earlier today we saw a couple of red-eared sliders, so that makes three turtle species in one day in this area.

Describe what happened. Example
"Mother Blanding had made her nest between the goldenrod and bluestem outside my window late last June.
By chance we were sitting on the porch when we noticed little blandings in the same location we had seen the mother take 2 months earlier."
