The Subway restaurant chain opened it's first store in 1965 in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Named "Pete's Super Submarines", it was opened by Fred DeLuca with a loan of $1000 from friend Peter Buck. The following year the two friends formed Doctor's Associates Inc. and began expanding by opening additional locations throughout Connecticut. They renamed the sandwich shop "Subway" in 1968, with 16 locations by 1974. It was around that time that they decided to start franchising.

It was more than 10 years later when brothers Tom, Peter and Paul Vokey opened the first Subway restaurant in Canada, on Water St in St. John's, Newfoundland. In a news article from 2016, Tom Vokey reports how many local were quiet skepticism at first about the venture - along with confusion about the name. However, the Water Street restaurant was a success, and continues to operate to this day. As for Tom, he went on to own and operate numerous additional Subway locations.

By 2010, the number of Subway locations in Canada was nearly 2500 - almost double the number of McDonald’s in Canada.

Despite it's commercial significant, Canada's first Subway store is honored by a small, simple plaque affixed to the wall inside the restaurant. Without the plaque, it would be impossible to distinguish this location as being anything special relative to the other many locations in Canada.
