In the early 1800s, Camillo Borghese bought and annexed the adjacent Villa Giustiniani, expanding the estate to its current size. To mark the boundery between the new and the old grounds, the architect Luigi Canina designed and built in 1831 an Egyptian-style scenic portal (Propilei egizi), consisting of a small porch with sturdy columns on each side of the road, with two statues of lions guarding the eastern entrance of the gate and two obelisks on the west side, the latter bearing hieroglyphs inscribed only on the front side.
