Metal stele in memory of Josef von Gadolla in front of the new town hall in Gotha.
Josef Ritter von Gadolla (* 14 January 1897 in Graz; † 5 April 1945 in Weimar) was an Austrian-German officer. As "combat commander" of Gotha in Thuringia, he ensured at the end of the Second World War that the city was spared extensive destruction.
An explanatory plaque says:
Josef Ritter von Gadolla handed over the city of Gotha to the Allies as commander on April 4, 1945, 9:00 a.m. without a fight. On the same day, he was arrested and sentenced to death for "attempted handing over of the Gotha Festival Square to the enemy". The sentence was executed in Weimar on April 5, 1945. His courageous actions saved thousands of people and the city from destruction.
In May 2018 he was named an honorary citizen of Gotha.
