The Halifax explosion of December 6, 1917 completely leveled all of the wood frame buildings in this neighborhood. The area was reconstructed by the Halifax Relief Commission in the 1920's using a characteristic non-combustible "hydrostone" concrete blocks. Today it is one of Canada's most desirable neighborhoods.
Nova Scotia artist Laurie Mireau, who is famous for her watercolor paintings of Nova Scotia scenes, has created a painted utility box featuring a two story, neo-classical style home made of "hydrostone" concrete. The image wraps around the four sides of this narrow utility box.
