The Vicus Iugarius is a very old way, which may already exist before the founding of Rome. This is probably a section of a trade route that made it possible to reach the Tiber River, where the ships landed their shipments of salt, from Via Salaria. The Vicus Iugarius then extended to the Quirinal Hill. Under the Republic then the Empire, the term Vicus Iugarius only represents part of the archaic road that is converted into a street.

One of the ends of the Vicus Iugarius opens to the north-west of the Roman Forum, between the temple of Saturn and the Julia basilica, near the Servilius basin. A bow, built under Tiberius, marks the start of the street from the Forum. On the other side, the street ends on the Champ de Mars, near the Forum Holitorium, at the Carmental Gate of the Wall Servien.
