The Waldensian Presbyterian Church was founded in 1893 when a small group of Waldensians from the Cottian Alps in Italy founded the town of Valdese. The church was founded as the Waldensian Evangelical Church as part of the Waldensian denomination. The denomination is the oldest Evangelical church still in existence dating from 400 years before the Reformation.
On July 9, 1895, the Waldensian Evangelical Church of Valdese became part of the Presbytery of Concord of the Presbyterian Church in the United States.
Since 1893, it has been part of the Presbyterian Church USA and is now a member of the Presbytery of Western North Carolina.
