The Central Landfill is one of 13 Superfund sites in Rhode Island. A half acre withing the landfill was used for disposal of large volumes of liquid industrial waste in the mid- to late-1970s. Remediation includes site capping and hydraulic containment and treatment of groundwater. The latter began in 2006 and in 2013 the EPA determined the system was to be moved to a lower gradient location at what will be the edge of the waste management area once Phase VI of the landfill is finished. EPA continues to monitor the site conditions. [1]
Background
The Central Landfill site is a 154-acre active waste disposal facility in Johnston, Rhode Island. The site consists of two operable units (OUs). OU-1 consists of the entire site – the 121-acre Phase I Landfill area (Phase I) and the 33-acre Phase II and III landfill areas. The OU-2 study area included about 1,333 acres surrounding the 154-acre OU-1 site. During the mid to late 1970s, a half-acre area (referred to as the “hot spot”) within the unlined Phase I landfill was used for disposal of large volumes of liquid industrial waste, resulting in soil and groundwater contamination. Following construction of the site’s remedy, groundwater treatment and operation and maintenance activities are ongoing.
Created by the Rhode Island General Assembly in 1974, Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corporation now operates five major components in the 1,040 acre facility in Johnston, Rhode Island.
