"The Academy Garden, to breathe the air from the open sea. An exceptional space that allows to dominate the harbour and the whole military domain

Already in the Age of Enlightenment, the captain of the ship Bigot de Morogues, an expert in ballistics and strategy, regularly brings together astronomers, writers, engineers, doctors, ship officers and naval architects in his living room; we are in 1746, with Choquet de Lindu, Frézier, Ozanne, Roquefeuil. In 1752, Louis XV made this learned society official as a General Academy for all ports based in Brest. Composed of young officers crazy about marine science, it was to place Brest at the forefront of the Enlightenment and advance ideas.

"Through it, knowledge benefits everyone. That was his motto. It is in homage to its optimistic and enlightened members that this belvedere, next to the Château, was named Jardin de l'Académie de Marine. A little dormant, it was given a second life in 1769 under the impetus of the Duke of Roquefeuil, and became the Royal Academy of Marine, in conjunction with the Academy of Sciences, and welcomed Borda, Bougainville, Fleuriot de Langle, Sané, de Kerguelen..."
