Minnesota State University Moorhead plays in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference as one of the charter members. The conference was founded as the Northern Teachers Athletic Conference in 1932, when MSUM was Moorhead State Teachers College.
Alex J. "Sliv" Nemzek was a life long Moorhead resident and star athlete, a four sport letterman at Moorhead High School. Nemzek was part of the undefeared 1913 football team.
Lt Col. Nemzek commanded the 2nd Battalion of the 136th Infantry for over 20 years and fought in both World War I and World War II.
Mayor Nemzek lead Moorhead from 1948-49.
As Athletic Director and coach of all major sports teams from 1923 - 1941, Sliv compiled an unexcelled record at Moorhead State Teachers College. The college named it's new field house in his honor in 1960, two years after Mr. Nemzeks passing.
