Half moons are often used in heraldry and represent the moon that lights the night sky for travellers, though it does not resemble the shape of a crescent moon very closely. In English arms it’s was also a mark of cadency signifying the second son.
In this case the sign seems to be illustrating the moon's lighting the way for travellers.
