Big Cypress Bend is located in the Fakahatchee Strand Preserve State Park. The largest grove of native/wild Royal Palm trees in the country is located here. There is a boardwalk just off of US 41 east of Naples, Florida and just west of State Road 29. Everglades City is nearby to the south.
The timber industry moved to the Big Cypress Bend area in the 1920's and harvested timber up until the mid 1960's. In the process destroying the environment of what was once known as America's Amazon forest. But due to the private ownership of the land around Big Cypress Bend a stand of virgin cypress was saved along with other native species.
A 1.2 mile roundtrip boardwalk will take you into the heart of the Big Cypress Bend NNL. This area was designated a National Natural Landmark in 1966.
