EN Rognac is a French commune located in the department of Bouches-du-Rhône, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. It is part of the Aix-Marseille-Provence metropolis. Its inhabitants are called the Rognacais.
The first traces of human presence on the soil of Rognac date back to the third millennium BC. The edges of the Etang de Berre are then inhabited by sedentary populations practicing hunting and fishing. The plain and the rocky bars are also inhabited by groups practicing in particular the culture and the breeding.
A Ligurian tribe founded a village in the plain as well as a castrum at a place called Castellas (1st millennium BC).
With the Roman installation, many villas were built. One of them, Rudinacum, is said to have given Rognac its name. Despite centuries of decline, the Rognac site has not been abandoned. Around the year 1000, a stately castle was built and a village perched at the foot of the Castellas developed. In the middle of the 15th century, the populations of Rognac abandoned this high site to settle on the plain and around the pond
