At the plant, wastewater is typically treated through a series of five major steps: preliminary treatment, primary treatment, secondary treatment, advanced treatment, and disinfection, followed by processes to reuse or to dispose of the remaining products. This treatment requires an intricate balance of physical, biological, and chemical processes.
Waste water is in the facility for 14 hours and then spends 4.5 days in polishing ponds. During this time there is 97% removal of suspended solids and 90% removal of ammonia.

Moorhead uses Slowed water movement to let particles settle our, activated sludge and lagoons for biological treatment.
