From the webiste of the parish:
The Sint Nicolaasbasiliek was built in neo-gothic style between 1885 and 1887 after the design of the architect Alfred Tepe and is a so-called three-aisled hall church. The church is one of the coolest examples of this style in our country.

This church is the fourth place of worship. The first church passed into the Reformation in 1577. It was not until 1635 that we again had access to our own secret church on the Havenstraat. It was replaced in 1780 by a third church, which served until 1887 and was torn down in 1888.

The church was restored in the period 1968-1972. The walls below the windows were then renewed and the modern entrance areas were installed, with the handles on the interior doors striking. The floor was renewed and underfloor heating was installed. In that period, the bench rows were also removed from the side aisles. In addition, new construction of the rectory took place.

On November 11, 1972, Pope Paul granted the church the title of “Basilica Minor”; the highest honorary title for a church building outside the city of Rome.
