The University of Alabama says it currently has no plans to close due to the threat of coronavirus, but is asking students to be ready to move to “alternative methods” of learning if necessary.

In a Wednesday night update, the university said while "current plans call for maintaining normal campus operations,” the switch to online-only classes could take place depending on the state of COVID-19 in Alabama.

As of Wednesday night, there are no confirmed cases of coronavirus in Alabama.

The update asked students to plan ahead if they leave campus for spring break and take things such as electronics, textbooks, class materials and valuables with them. Students who live on campus and opt to stay there during spring break will be accommodated, the university said.

Students who develop respiratory symptoms during spring break or those who come in contact with someone believed to have coronavirus are asked not to return to campus. Alternative arrangements for remote learning will be offered to those students.

UA’s spring break is March 16-20.

In a question and answer posted to its website, UA said it will remain open and will not be “canceling courses or moving to online-only courses after Spring Break.

“Our campus has a number of comprehensive plans to address emergencies and a variety of contingencies. We continuously review and keep those plans updated,” UA said.

UA’s spring break is March 16-20.

Avoid “non-essential domestic travel”

The university has also issued guidance advising against any “non-essential domestic travel,” especially to “large conference with attendees from multiple states or locations that have declared at state of emergency due to the virus.”

Faculty, staff and students are “encouraged to use good judgment” when making travel decisions, and teleconference or live stream official events if at all possible.

The guidance covers all universities in the UA system.

The university had already canceled all college-sponsored international travel scheduled to depart in May. This included UA faculty-led study abroad programs schedule to leave during spring break.
