On the 1st September 1855 on the banks of the Fitzroy River Charles Archer on 'Sleipner' made rendezvous with his brother Colin Archer in the ketch Ellida.This meeting determined the site of the city of Rockhampton.
Charles is wearing a long sleeved open necked shirt rolled up to the elbows, long pants and riding boots,the statue is close to the southern bank of the Fitzroy River which in 1853, Charles and William Archer were the first Europeans to discover.Born in Scotland in 1813, Charles Archer died in Norway in 1862.He arrived in Australia 1841, he discovered and named the Fitzroy River with his brother William 1853, explored the Peak Downs district with his brother Colin 1854 and took up land there (Gracemere) 1855, running sheep and cattle till early 1870s, then cattle only. Rockhampton now stands on part of the original Gracemere run.
