The First Congregational church was established in Westfield in 1679. The first pastor was the Rev. Edward Taylor (1642 – 1729) who is considered to be colonial America's first poet. The current church is the fourth structure erected on this site. It was designed by L. F. Thayer in the Romanesque style, constructed by George Green, and completed in 1860. The original steeple was destroyed by a windstorm and replaced in 1886. This steeple remained in use until a new steeple matching the original steeple was erected in 1962.
The two story high brick structure has red stone entrance steps leading to double doors at the arched entrance. The first and second story front and side windows have ornate cast iron caps that are painted white. The pyramidal steeple is set on a clock tower.
