The Bethel Garden Club first established a garden to honor the works of William Shakespeare in 1995 in front of the Bethel Public Library. The garden incorporated plants mentioned in the writings of Shakespeare. When the library was expanded the garden was moved to it's present location on the Library Place side of the building in 2005. A 19th century urn, which was once part of the P. T. Barnum Fountain is located placed in the center of the garden. It carries the sign inscribed THE SHAKESPEARE GARDEN
