Dit sculptuur geeft twee ridders te paard weer, die elkaar in een zgn. steekspel bestrijden. Dit soort toernooien werd in de Middeleeuwen op grote schaal gehouden. In Haarlem was de Grote Markt (toen 't Sant geheten) vaak het strijdtoneel. Vast staat dat in het jaar 1323 een groot internationaal "‘s-Graven steekspel" plaatsvond in de stad.
Het bronzen beeld is van Eric Claus. De compositie is gebaseerd op een naar buiten draaiende spiraal, waardoor het aan alle kanten dynamisch en expressief oogt. Een voorstudie van dit werk bevindt zich in het Frans Hals museum.
"Kunstenaar Eric Claus (1936) is een vertegenwoordiger van de hedendaagse klassieke beeldhouwkunst. Vanaf begin jaren 1960 wordt zijn werk op veel plaatsen in de openbare ruimte in Nederland geïnstalleerd en in de jaren 1980 was hij hoogleraar aan de Rijksacademie voor beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam. Claus is ook medailleur en heeft diverse munten en penningen ontworpen."

This sculpture depicts two knights on horseback fighting each other in a so-called jousting game. Tournaments of this kind were widely held in the Middle Ages. In Haarlem, the Grote Markt (then called 't Sant) was often the battleground. It is certain that in the year 1323 a large international "" s-Graven joust "took place in the city.
The bronze statue is by Eric Claus. The composition is based on an outwardly rotating spiral, making it look dynamic and expressive on all sides. A preliminary study of this work is in the Frans Hals museum.
Artist Eric Claus (1936) is a representative of contemporary classical sculpture. From the early 1960s his work was installed in many places in public spaces in the Netherlands and in the 1980s he was a professor at the National Academy of Visual Arts in Amsterdam. Claus is also a medalist and has designed various coins and medals. "
