On 3 August 1802, 415 Scottish settlers arrived in Sydney Harbour aboard the 245 ton ship "Northern Friends." The cairn on which the plaque is affixed, is located at the corner of Esplanade and Amelia Street, in Sydney, Nova Scotia.

Inscription on the plaque:

On 3 August 1802, the 245 ton ship "Northern Friends", arrived in Sydney Harbour with 415 settlers from Scotland. This marked the first immigration directly from Scotland to Cape Breton and formed the vanguard of the great migration which gave this Island its Scottish character.
