Designed by Fargo architect, W.F. Kurke and built in 1930 for about $130,000, the school was called Central Grade School until it was named for Emerson H. Smith, who came to Fargo in 1884 from Orange County, Vt., where he was born in 1854. Information from Andrea Halgrimson, The Forum of Fargo-Moorhead writer.
