Douglas Kornfield created this sculpture of a raised arm with an opened hand to represent the attributes of people who adhere to Dr. King's passive, non-violent methods of social protesting. The hand raised with open fingers shows peaceful intent. The hole in the middle of the hand symbolizes transparency, that nothing is being hidden or held.

The extended hand sculpture stands 32 feet high. It is made of sheet steel perforated with small holes, outlined in a supportive steel framed. There is a second, larger, polished hole in the lower part of the arm, at the base. This hole is large enough to step through, symbolizing acceptance and unity. Again, this openness supports the non-violent methods of Dr. King.

This "Open Hand, Open Mind, Open Heart" sculpture is on the edge of the Pittman-Sullivan City Park on the east side of downtown San Antonio. It is also near the Davis-Scott Branch YMCA parking area and facility.
