On June 22, 2020 Vicente Abril was struck by a vehicle just inside the Mule Pass Tunnel resulting in his death. The monument is located at the Northwest entrance to the tunnel.

Vicente Eduardo Abril was born in Douglas, Az on Jan. 13, 1962 and raised in Bisbee, Az. Abril worked for the Smelter in Playas, NM for twenty years, Then worked for his father's furniture store until he received this Education degree. Vincente taught in the Douglas, Az. school system and was on the Naco, Az. School board.
