This City First Building houses the offices of the Mayor and City Council, the City Clerk, City Attorney and City Manager. It is located on the southwest corner of First Street and Littler. The Municipal Court and Council chambers, as well as other city offices are located in other parts of the downtown area. This building is a one-story masonry-slab building with a flat roof.
Edmond was first settled in 1887 when the railroad came through and designated this area as a watering station, due to its higher elevation. Originally referred to as Summit, the station was later named for Santa Fe freight agent Edmond Burdick. The official start of the town was during the Land Run of April 22, 1889. The town decided to keep the name Edmond. Edmond is the site of the State's first teaching college. Opened in 1891 as Territorial Normal School, it is now the prestigious University of Central Oklahoma.
The City has a Mayor/City Council form of government. The mayor is elected at large for a term of two years. The four City Council members are elected by the residents for a four-year term.
