This statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Queen of Heaven, is located in front of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church on East Grandview Boulevard in Erie, Pennsylvania. The statue depicts the Blessed Virgin with crown and scepter, holding the infant Christ, who also wears a crown and holds the orb, representing his authority over the world.

The Blessed Virgin Mary is venerated by Christians as the Mother of the Word Incarnate, Our Lord Jesus Christ. As a young girl betrothed to St. Joseph, Mary was visited by the angel Gabriel and told that she would conceive a son by the Holy Ghost, who would be the Son of God. In humble obedience to the divine messenger, Mary replied, "Behold the handmaid of the Lord, be it done to me according to thy word." In Bethlehem, her Son was born and was adored by shepherds and kings. As is known throughout the world, this Son, Jesus Christ, went on to suffer on the cross and rise again, offering salvation to the world through Him.

The Catholic and Orthodox Churches particularly honor Mary with the titles Mother of God (Theotokos in Greek) and Queen of Heaven. As Pope Pius XII taught in his 1954 encyclical letter, Ad Caeli Reginam, "From the earliest ages of the Catholic Church a Christian people, whether in time of triumph or more especially in time of crisis, has addressed prayers of petition and hymns of praise and veneration to the Queen of Heaven. And never has that hope wavered which they placed in the Mother of the Divine King, Jesus Christ; nor has that faith ever failed by which we are taught that Mary, the Virgin Mother of God, reigns with a mother's solicitude over the entire world, just as she is crowned in heavenly blessedness with the glory of a Queen."
