EN St-Irénée Church is the second parish church of the Castelroussine community.
The first place of worship is located on the adret side of the Rabioux valley in the current hamlet of St-Marcellin near the castle, the original nucleus of the parish of Châteauroux.
The construction of a second church testifies to the intense economic and social transformations since the 17th century, favoring the development of housing at the bottom of the slopes. The main driving force behind this "descent" from the habitat was the establishment of the new royal road in 1756, which no longer linked the high altitude hamlets.
The population of Aubergeries and Mathieux, at the approach of this new axis, is in strong increase and the old places of worship become more and more cramped. Also in 1796, a rare thing during the revolutionary period, a decision was made to build a church to replace the small St-Antoine chapel on the same site, which had already been mentioned in 1516.
The work continued until 1806 and, on April 12, 1811, the church of St-Irénée became the New Center of the parish of Châteauroux, which was confirmed by the royal ordinance of June 14, 1826.
The St-Irénée dedication seems to have been taken in honor of the bishop of Digne and Gap, Irénée Dessoles (1802-1805) who worked hard for the birth of the new parish.
Under the July Monarchy, in 1830-31, the ep building was enlarged: it was then that the current bell tower was built.
All this testifies to the intense vitality of the town, which had around 1900 inhabitants in 1856.
At the end of the 19th century, the building was redesigned in a very original way. In 1890, the small nave, located at the time to the east of the bell tower (on the Today road side) shows signs of fragility: its vault should be consolidated and the entire building enlarged. Instead, another project was chosen and in 1895-96 a new church was built on the western side of the bell tower which is today the only surviving element of the original church. This is why there is a small door on the east side of the bell tower which once communicated with the old church and which today opens directly onto the street.
