As part of the WPA art project, Ethel Magafan was awarded the opportunity to paint a mural for the Madill post office lobby. After speaking with local residents, she chose the theme Prairie Fire because these prairie events were a common occurrence in the Madill area. The mural was completed in 1940. The lobby of the post office is open 24/7.
The mural shows the utter panic of a prairie fire. A covered wagon stands on the prairie with a woman and child inside. Four cattle are in front of the wagon. A man is trying to settle down a frightened horse, and another is horseback. One man is carrying a shovel, and the other a cloth. In the distance is a raging fire sweeping across the prairie toward them.
Ethel and her sister Jenne were both artists, and their story is depicted in detail on Page 8 of this NRHP nomination form. Ethel Magafan
