The county of Angus in eastern Scotland lies on the North Sea coast with its eastern boundary being formed by the coastline. Heading inland for over thirty miles to the north-west, the county stretches into the Grampian Mountains and specifically the plateau of The Mounth. In the extreme north-west corner and only a few hundred yards from the border with Perth & Kinross and Aberdeenshire is the summit of Glas Maol which at 3,504 feet or 1068 metres, is the highest point of the county.

The mountain's name means grey/green mountain, and it is a rounded grassy dome typical of those in the area. It can be reached from the Glenshee ski area from the west, where ski tows adorn the western slope, or from Glen Isla to the south via an old hill pass which runs to Braemar. From this side the Caenlochan Glen forms a deep trench which abuts the eastern flank of the mountain.

The summit area is fairly level area of grass and stones, with the summit being marked by a stone shelter and a stone built Ordnance Survey trig pillar. The views are extensive, taking in most of Angus to the south-east, and the higher Cairngorms on the northern horizon.
