A donation box for 'Church Expenses' at the west end of the nave in the church of St Mary Magdalene & St Andrew, Ridlington.

Alms boxes have been placed in churches for charitable donations since the middle ages. Later, sometimes in addition to, they were replaced by donation boxes for church expenses. Most surviving poor boxes date from the Elizabethan and Jacobean eras, although this example is mid 19th century. It is of a simple design, and doesn't have the heavy iron strapwork of earlier boxes.
