The monument of King Alfonso IX changes its location to the roundabout of the fishing port.
On the occasion of the completion of the construction and conditioning works of the new roundabout that gives access to the fishing port and allows the change of direction at the height of Elduayen street and the beginning of the Alfonso IX promenade, the City Council of Baiona transfers the figure of the King Alfonso IX to that new location.
Its relocation is due to a better contextualization of the monument since it will be exposed at the beginning of the walk that bears its name and due to the dimensions of the new roundabout, the monument will gain in visibility and therefore will have a greater role.
With this change, it is intended that the monument look in a privileged place and according to the magnitude of the work that was inaugurated in 2001 on the occasion of the VIII Centenary of the Baiona Foundation, commemorating the granting of the Puebla and Foundational Charter that the King Alfonso IX granted it to the Royal Villa of Baiona in 1201.
This sculpture weighs approximately 2,000 kilos and is one of the few equestrian works in which the rider is dismounted from his horse. It is the work of the sculptor from Tudencia Juan Oliveira Viéitez, also author of the Horses of the Plaza de España in Vigo and other pieces that are exhibited at the Rockefeller Art Center in New York, Toronto, Ostend, London, Madrid, Menorca, Tui and others Galician towns. For his contribution to Galician culture, the Xunta de Galicia awarded him the Medal of Castelao in 2001.
This change will allow, in turn, a deconcentration of the monuments located in the surroundings of the La Palma park and a reorganization of the new space that will remain on the Paseo Ribeira.
