We have seen this particular gopher tortoise crossing the roads and along the edge of pavement in this area on a number of occasions. Never was able to catch it on camera as it crossed but this time phone was in hand. We stopped in the middle of the road to keep traffic from going around us and to protect the tortoise and waited for it to cross completely. Just after it stepped off the pavement and onto grassy ground it stopped for a moment to grab a mouthful of grass and then continued into the brush. We speculate this tortoise lives in the vacant lot at this location. Unfortunately as lots are cleared for new housing the tortoise’s habitat is diminishing and being destroyed. This particular gopher tortoise is approximately 9-10 inches long and about 6-7 inches wide. (visit link)
