I 1920'erne ønskede Næstved Kommune at rive bygningen ned.

Kompagnihuset (The company House) in Næstved is the Nordic region's oldest "Gildehus". A "Gilde" was an association of merchants.
The company house is located on the southern outskirts of the medieval town center and is built in Gothic. The building is in one storey with basement. It is built of red monk stones and has a tile roof. Both gables have ridges. The upper floor is one large room, while the basement consists of several smaller rooms.
The doors to the basement in the side have pointed arches with round arches inside. The windows are round arched.
The company house has had a changeable life and has been being demolished several times. It was built as a Gildehus, later it was used for storing wood and later storing salt. As early as 1622 it was so dilapidated that there was a danger that it would collapse the same, but a carpenter bought it, and restored it.
It was still used for storage, but fell into disrepair again. In the 1920s, Næstved Municipality wanted to demolish the building. However, the building had been protected in 1918. Instead, restoration work began, which took place from 1926-1930. The building was closed again in 1967, when it was in very poor condition, and i.a. damaged by salt, as it had been used for many years as a storage of salt and fertilizer.
In 1982, it was sold for DKK 1 to Næstved Nostalgic Society, which was formed to renovate the building. The building was restored from 1983-1985 with the help of the architect Jens Christian Varming. The board of Næstved Nostalgiske Selskab received the Europa Nostra award in 1993, for the restoration. The award was presented by Prince Henrik, who was president of the organization.
The company house is now rented out as meeting and party rooms.
