The five Eitel brothers immigrated from Stuttgart to Chicago throughout the 1890s. In Chicago they became known as restaurateurs and hoteliers, operating several hotels and restaurants that were well known in the Chicago German community.

This unique store front, which still stands on Randolph Street in Chicago, was once the home of the Old Heidelberg Inn restaurant, opened in 1934. The building had the German-style facade seen in these pictures. The building has bells which ring the time every hour, and used to have a figure that would pop out from the door near the top of the facade, like a cuckoo clock, when the bells rang. The day I was there, this figure did not appear but the bells still sounded.

After Old Heidelberg closed, the building became a steakhouse and was most recently a tea shop, but the day I visited it was vacant. The facade has been preserved throughout these many changes.
