Johann Gregor Mendel (visit link) – the father of genetics was born on 20. 7. 1822 on his parents (Anton and Rosina Mendel) farmstead in Hyncice, Silesia. He was christened a Catholic two days later in the Church of St. Peter and Paul in Vražné, Moravia, and given the name Johann.

He is a famous native of Moravia and Silesia where he spent most of his life (died 8. 1. 1884 in Brno). The memorial to this world-renowned figure was revealed in the house of his birth in 1965. The Museum of Gregor Mendel was opened in 2007 after the reconstruction of the entire farm. Its purpose is to acquaint visitors with Johann’s region – Kravarsko, in the district of Nový Jicín. The exhibition focuses on the basic description of J. G. Mendel’s journey, where he combined his scientific experiments with the life of a monk in the Augustinian monastery in Brno. Gregor Mendel died while serving as the abbot of the monastery (1868–84). Experiments with plant hybrids – the results of his long years of work with the final postulates recognized as pillars of contemporary genetics – were published in 1865 in Brno before going into print in 1866.
