The 'Canadian War Cemetery' in Bergen op Zoom is the final resting place for 1116 soldiers, 968 of them are Canadians.
Most of them were killed in the Battle of the Scheldt, an attempt to liberate the Netherlands from the west and to take possession of the ports of Antwerp. Officially, the cemetery is Canadian territory. After the war, the Netherlands donated the land to Canada as a thank you for its help in the liberation of the Netherlands.
