At the entrance to the group of softball fields northwest of McCormic Park in Fort Riley, there stands a short stone monument with a sloped top on which is mounted a memorial plaque to SGT Dominic Sacco. SGT Sacco had spent time training here at Fort Riley and was well known to love playing softball, so it is no surprise that his memorial marker is in a prominent place at the entrance into the softball fields. The fields are located at 30601 Pistol Range Road, Fort Riley, KS 66442. They are between McCormic Road on the south and Pistol Range Road to the north of McCormic Park.

The bronze plaque honoring SGT Sacco reads as follows:

"Sergeant Dominic Sacco

Killed in action in Iraq 21 November 2005 in Mushada, Iraq

SGT Sacco was killed while serving on patrol when he was struck by a single sniper round. Prior to that time he had logged well over 1,000 hours of patrols on Route Tampa where he secured one of the most dangerous roads in Iraq. He was a tank commander in the 1st Battalion, 13th Armor, in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom from Feb through Nov 2005. SGT Sacco was the essence of a United States Army tanker - fearless, larger than life, a tenacious Soldier, and a leader with influence greater than that which was embodied in the rank he wore on his collar. Many Soldiers - subordinates, peers, and senior alsike - credited him for "teaching them more about being a tanker than any other individual."

An extremely committed softball enthusiast, SGT Sacco was known by many across Ft. Riley for his athletic prowess. He played softball on this field every season during his time at Ft. Riley until he was killed in 2005.

"Sacco Field" stands as an enduring testament to Dominic's commitment to the Army community and it showcases his commitment to athletics and healthy competition characteristic of modern warriors. Most importantly, this field of competition serves to celebrate the bravery and loyal service of a committed Soldier and non-commissioned officer who represents so many others lime him at a place where we continue to train and unite other Soldiers who will, on later days, step out like him in service to the Nation."
