Eugenio Maria Giuseppe Giovanni Pacelli was born in Rome Italy on March 2, 1876. He was ordained as a priest on April 2, 1899. He rose rapidly through the ranks of the church hierarchy and was made a cardinal on December 16, 1929. In 1935 he reached the rank of Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church, a position in which he administered the property and revenues of the Holy See. Upon the death of Pope Pius XI he was elected Pope of the Catholic Church on March 2, 1939 taking the name Pius XII.
As a cardinal, the main feature of his coat of arms was a dove of peace with outspread wings and olive branch in its beak. This was a reference to his family name Pacelli, pace is the Italian word for peace. Upon becoming Pope he slightly altered his arms to depict a dove with closed wings perched on a trimount. Below is a banner with the motto of Pope Pius XII - OPUS JUSTITIAE PAX (The work of justice shall be peace." Is. 32:17).
