This is a substantial, white boundary stone, standing about three foot tall. Its south face is inscribed ‘4 - W. H. P. 1864’. It is therefore West Ham Parish marker stone No. 4, placed here in (or possibly before) 1864. I say that it is possibly older because there is also an unclear inscription on the north face. At the top, this appears to have ‘W.H.P.’ for West Ham Parish. There are then possibly some initials, maybe of parish officials. Below this are the numbers ‘181’, maybe the first three digits of a date. The stone is part of a long series of parish boundary markers around West Ham Parish. The markers take various forms and many of them survive.

This stone was placed here to mark the boundary between West Ham (to the west) and Little Ilford (to the east) parishes. The Manor of Little Ilford is named in the Doomsday Book of 1086 and Little Ilford was established as a rural parish by the late twelfth century, the parish church being St Mary the Virgin on modern Church Road, E12. It was abolished as a civil parish in 1900 and as an ecclesiastical parish in 1938, being absorbed into the parish of East Ham.
