The S.H. Kress five-and-dime store occupied the corner at 215 Pike St. in Seattle in 1934. According to the National Building Museum, the national chain, founded in 1896 and disbanded in 1981, was well-known for the architectural design of its stores. Although the building still stands, the site of a department store next to it is now a parking lot. (September 06, 2001)
