De kolonievaart begint bij de koloniesluis nabij Huis Ter Heide en loopt dan in westelijke richting naar / door Veenhuizen. Vanaf Sluis I gaat het kanaal dan verder als Veenhuizerkanaal in de richting van Haulerwijk en Bakkeveen.
Het Veenhuizerkanaal is in1816 is gegraven. Het had een lengte van 11,1 km, waar tegenwoordig nog 4,38 kilometer van over is. Het kanaal heeft een breedte van 13 tot 16 meter. Door hooge verschil van bijna 3 meter tussen beide zijden van het kanaal zijn er twee sluizen in het kanaal geplaatst om dit hoogte verschil te overwinnen, dit waren Sluis I (of Sluis Hut), Sluis II (of Veenhuizersluis). Beide sluizen zijn buiten gebruik gesteld, in Sluis II is een betonnen wand als stuw geplaatst. Hierdoor is op deze plek een waterval van ruim twee meter ontstaan.

The canal 'Kolonievaart' starts at the Kolonie-lock near Huis Ter Heide and then runs in a westerly direction to / through Veenhuizen. From Sluis I, the canal then continues as the Veenhuizer-canal in the direction of Haulerwijk and Bakkeveen.
The Veenhuizer-canal was dug in 1816. It had a length of 11.1 km, of which is still 4.38 km today. The canal has a width of 13 to 16 meters.
