The historic Waldo Church, saved from the flooded Kootenay River Valley.

With the waters of the Kootenay River rising to form Lake Koocanusa with the completion of the Libby Dam in August of 1975, the historically-minded among the members of the Waldo - Baynes Lake Community Club, convinced of the importance of preserving their heritage, rescued the Waldo church and moved it about 3 miles to Baynes Lake.

Formerly a small Anglican church, it is now a non denomination place of worship.

Taken from a July 2014 newspaper cutting (Kootenay Advertiser) within the church -
"One hundred years ago, a small community called Waldo in the South Country erected a small church at the urgings of Mrs. Charles McNab, wife of the Baker Lumber Company Holdings manager.

Little did the town know at the time that this church would be the only surviving building of that community.

Its first test came on an August afternoon in 1929 when fire destroyed half the buildings in the town. While the fence surrounding the church burned, it remained intact. Around 40 years later, when Libby Dam was constructed, the town was burned again (after purchase agreements had been made) in preparation for the flooding. All the buildings were destroyed this time, except of course, for the church.

The Sharpe family and the Waldo-Baynes lake Community Club negotiated with the province, resulting in having the church moved to Baynes Lake where it still stands today. It is looked after by South Country Christian Fellowship."
